Check into a health care clinic before you leave for information about immunizations and/or medications and any other special precautions that will help you avoid disease while abroad.

Medication

If you take medication, be sure to pack an extra supply, but don’t go overboard or you may arouse the suspicion of customs officials. To be on the safe side, carry a duplicate of your original subscription indicating both the generic and trade names of the product, and leave all medication in its original packaging. Also, keep in mind that many medications sold over the counter in Canada require a subscription in other countries. If you have a medical condition requiring the use of syringes, bring along an adequate supply to avoid the dangers and risks of contamination in your host country.

Health insurance

Your provincial health insurance may only cover a portion of any required health costs while you are abroad. Call your health insurance provider for details on your coverage and the terms and conditions surrounding your return. Health insurance is a worthwhile investment – don’t leave home without it. Make sure you understand the terms of your policy, especially if you plan to be abroad for a significant length of time.
